M83 began in the late 1990s when two friends from Antibes started experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines in their bedrooms. Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau released their self titled debut album in 2001 on the French label Gooom Disques. That record and the follow up Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts in 2003 established a dense atmospheric sound full of layered electronics and shoegaze influences.

After Fromageau departed in 2004 Gonzalez took the project in new directions. Before the Dawn Heals Us in 2005 introduced more prominent vocals and rock energy. Saturdays = Youth from 2008 leaned heavily into 1980s new wave nostalgia with bright synths and emotional melodies. The breakthrough came with the 2011 double album Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. Its lead single Midnight City became a global phenomenon and helped the project reach audiences far beyond the indie scene.

Gonzalez has since explored soundtrack work including the 2013 score for Oblivion. Later albums like Junk in 2016 and DSVII in 2019 showed playful retro sounds and more instrumental pieces. The name M83 comes from the Messier 83 galaxy also known as the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy. Anthony Gonzalez chose it because he loved the idea of music that felt vast and cosmic.

Morgan Kibby contributed vocals to several key albums including the hit track Kim and Jessie. Her work helped define the warmer more melodic phase of the project.

Anthony Gonzalez's brother Yann directs many of the music videos and also created the film You and the Night for which Gonzalez composed the score.
