Lychee Light Club
Usamaru Furuya
Overview
Set in a smog-choked Keiko Town during the year 20XX, nine middle school boys form the Hikari Club with a singular goal: to build a god-like robot that will cleanse the world of ugliness. Led by the charismatic and ruthless Zera, the group scavenges discarded computer parts to construct the Lychee Machine, named for its reddish hue and hard shell. Their quest begins as a quirky sci-fi adventure but quickly descends into a nightmare of psychological terror and grotesque violence as the machine gains sentience.
The narrative shifts from childish innocence to a dark exploration of fascism and groupthink. As the children's obsession with perfection deepens, the line between creator and creation blurs, leading to a tragic conclusion that questions the nature of humanity. Usamaru Furuya adapted this story from his own stage play, infusing the manga with a unique blend of dark comedy and visceral horror that distinguishes it from standard genre fare.
