    About

Chip Wilson walked into a yoga class in 1998 and noticed something odd. Everyone was wearing cotton. The fabric soaked up sweat, stretched out of shape, and sagged through downward dog. Wilson, who had spent years in the surf and snowboard apparel business, saw an opening. He developed a proprietary fabric called Luon, a blend of nylon and Lycra that felt soft, held its shape, and flattered the body during movement. He made a few prototypes, sold them from a single storefront in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighborhood, and watched the line form down the block.

That first store opened in November 2000. By then, Wilson had already trademarked the name Lululemon, chosen partly because he thought Japanese speakers would have trouble pronouncing the letter L, making the brand sound exotic to Asian markets. The company went public in 2007 on the NASDAQ under the ticker LULU. Revenue climbed from $3.2 million in 2001 to over $10.6 billion in fiscal 2024. The product line expanded from women's yoga wear into men's apparel, running gear, footwear, and accessories. Today, Lululemon operates 767 stores worldwide and sells in more than 20 countries.

The brand's growth strategy, called Power of Three x2, aims to double revenue to $12.5 billion by 2026. Key pillars include product innovation, guest experience, and international expansion, especially in China. The company has invested $44.8 million toward its Impact Agenda, a set of environmental and social goals. But the road hasn't been smooth. A 2013 recall of black yoga pants that turned sheer in bright light exposed quality-control gaps. Founder Chip Wilson later made comments about the pants not working for some women's bodies, sparking backlash. He resigned from the board in 2015 but continues to criticize leadership publicly.
