The company traces its roots to a single grocery shop opened in Nattika, Kerala, in 1989 by M. A. Yusuff Ali. Its primary business segment is Lulu Retail, which runs three distinct store formats: Lulu Hypermarket, Lulu Supermarket, and Lulu Express. These locations stock everything from fresh produce and electronics to fashion and home goods. The group also owns major shopping complexes like the Lulu Mall in Kochi, India, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest shopping mall by area.

Recent developments show the company's resilience during global tensions. In early 2026, LuLu Group airlifted 80,000 kg of fresh food from South India to the UAE via Etihad Airways cargo flights to ensure supply chain stability amid rising Iran-Israel tensions. Chairman M.
