Lucasfilm, the production company behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones, began as a scrappy independent outfit in 1971. George Lucas founded it in San Rafael, California, after the success of his debut feature THX 1138. The company soon moved to San Francisco, where it became a hub for innovation in special effects, sound design, and computer animation, reshaping how movies are made. Its early hits, including American Graffiti and the original Star Wars, turned Lucas into a mogul and his company into a powerhouse.

Today, Lucasfilm is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios, acquired in 2012 for $4.05 billion. The deal brought Star Wars under the Disney umbrella, leading to a new era of sequels and spin-offs. Films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Rogue One (2016) have grossed billions worldwide, with The Force Awakens becoming the highest-grossing film ever in North America.
