    About This Album

On May 18, 2018, BTS released the third installment of their Love Yourself series, an album that took a sharp turn into heartbreak. Where its predecessor Love Yourself: Her buzzed with the giddy rush of new love, Love Yourself: Tear dwells in the aftermath, the silence after a door slams shut. The title itself carries a double meaning: the Korean word for 'tear' (눈물) and the English 'tear' as in ripping apart. That tension runs through every track.

The album opens with 'Intro: Singularity,' a sultry neo-soul piece performed by V, setting a mood of uneasy seduction before the lead single 'Fake Love' detonates. That song, built on a trap-tinged beat and a chorus that aches with betrayal, became BTS's first top-ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. But the album's emotional core might be 'The Truth Untold,' a Steve Aoki-produced ballad about hiding your true self behind a mask. Aoki later told Rolling Stone the collaboration came together in an unexpected way, BTS sent him the track while he was on tour, and he finished it in a hotel room.

Sonically, the album refuses to sit still. '134340' (named after the asteroid formerly known as Pluto) drifts through alt-R&B and jazz, while 'Paradise' offers a gentle hip-hop meditation on letting go of societal pressure. 'Magic Shop' is a shimmering future-bass anthem written partly as a message to fans, and 'Airplane Pt. 2', co-written with Ali Tamposi of 'Havana' fame, traces BTS's journey from obscurity to global stages. The closer 'Outro: Tear' is a four-and-a-half-minute rap tour de force, with RM, Suga, and J-Hope each delivering verses that feel like personal confessions.

Commercially, the album rewrote history. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 135,000 equivalent album units, making it the first Korean-language album ever to top the US chart. In the UK it became BTS's first top-ten album, peaking at number eight. By August 2018 it had sold over 100,000 copies in Japan, earning a gold certification from the RIAJ, another first for a BTS Korean-language album. Tower Records Japan named it the most imported album of the year.
