Love Live! Superstar!! is the third mainline series in the Love Live! franchise, produced by Kadokawa, Lantis, and Sunrise. The story follows five high school girls at Yuigaoka Girls' School who form the idol group Liella! as a club activity. As the group grows, they recruit new members over subsequent school years. Unlike previous Love Live! series that started with nine members, Superstar!! began with a tighter five-girl core, allowing deeper exploration of each character's personal struggles. Her growth mirrors the group's evolution from a tentative club to a powerhouse that competes in the national Love Live! tournament. The series has been praised for balancing the franchise's signature formula with fresh storytelling. At Yuigaoka Girls' School, a newly established institution in Tokyo, first-year student Kanon Shibuya finds herself drawn to the world of school idols after witnessing a dazzling performance. Despite her intense love for music, Kanon suffers from crippling stage fright, a fear that has held her back from pursuing her dreams. Inspired by the sight of a school idol group in action, she resolves to overcome her anxiety and form her own group. Alongside her are four other first-years: Keke Tang, a passionate Chinese transfer student who idolizes school idols; Chisato Arashi, Kanon's childhood friend and a gifted dancer; Sumire Heanna, a former child actress with a sharp tongue and hidden insecurities; and Ren Hazuki, the quiet, mysterious daughter of the school's chairperson. Together, they establish the school idol club, naming it Liella!, a portmanteau of the French "liée" (connected) and the musical term "rella" (a song to the Muse).

The first season chronicles their uphill battle to gain recognition. The school has no tradition of performing arts, and the club faces skepticism from both students and faculty. Kanon's stage fright nearly derails their first public performance, but with encouragement from her friends, she pushes through. Each girl confronts a personal obstacle: Keke struggles with her identity as a foreigner, Chisato balances her own dreams with her role as a supporter, Sumire grapples with the gap between her glamorous past and present reality, and Ren must assert her independence from her overbearing mother, the school chairperson. Their journey culminates in the Love Live! preliminaries, where they perform their first original song and earn a spot in the regional finals.

The second season jumps ahead one year, with Liella! now a five-member group that has gained some recognition. But the arrival of three new first-year members, Kinako Sakurakoji, a cheerful girl with a hidden competitive streak; Mei Yoneme, a stoic but caring student; and Shione Wakana, a shy girl with a powerful voice, disrupts the group's dynamic. The original five must learn to share leadership and trust newcomers, while the new members grapple with their own insecurities. A rival school idol group led by the talented Wien Margarete pushes Liella! to improve. The season explores themes of legacy and growth, as the expanded eight-member group faces tougher competition and the pressure to define their own identity separate from the original members' vision. They qualify for the Love Live! finals but lose to Wien's group, setting up a rematch in the third season.

The third season introduces two more members, Margarete Wien, the former rival who transfers to Yuigaoka, and Tomari Onitsuka, a first-year with a military-like discipline. Now a nine-member group, Liella! must integrate these strong personalities while preparing for the final Love Live! competition of their high school careers. The season deepens the rivalry with other school idol groups and explores the transition of leadership as the original five prepare for graduation. The story balances team-building with individual arcs, showing how the younger members step up to carry the group's legacy forward.
