Love and Deepspace
Overview
Love and Deepspace launched on iOS and Android on January 18, 2024, as the second entry in the Mr. Love series from Papergames, published internationally as Infold Games. It blends otome romance, simulation, and gacha mechanics into a futuristic sci-fi world where you play as a Deepspace Hunter. The core gameplay splits between real-time third-person combat against alien Wanderers and relationship-building through text chats, phone calls, and interactive dates. Three primary love interests Xavier, Zayne, and Rafayel drive the story, with a fourth, Sylus, added post-launch. The game runs on a proprietary engine delivering high-fidelity 3D graphics with detailed character models and smooth animations optimized for mobile.
Critics praised the visuals and immersive storytelling, with scores like 8/10 from Pocket Gamer, 7.5/10 from GameSpot, and 8.5/10 from IGN. Metacritic aggregates around 80/100, OpenCritic at 82%. Commercially, it topped download charts in China, Japan, South Korea, and the US in its first week, generating over $100 million in revenue in its first month. Awards include Mobile Game of the Year at the 2024 Game Developers Choice Awards, Best Art Direction at the Golden Joystick Awards, and Best Narrative at the TapTap Game Awards, with a nomination for Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards 2024.
Post-launch content rolls out regularly: events, story chapters, and limited-time gacha banners. Though primarily single-player, leaderboards for combat rankings and limited-time co-op events let you team up with others. The community thrives on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, and Discord with fan art, cosplay, and discussions. Love and Deepspace has been noted for redefining the otome genre with high production values and hybrid gameplay, attracting both romance game fans and action RPG enthusiasts, and setting a benchmark for mobile game quality in the Chinese market.
Gameplay
You navigate two distinct modes in Love and Deepspace. Combat plays out in real-time third-person perspective: you dodge, attack, and use skills against Wanderers, alien creatures that appear in stages. Each battle requires positioning and timing, with a stamina system limiting how many fights you can take on per day. Outside combat, you build relationships with the male leads through text chats that branch based on your replies, phone calls you can initiate or receive, and interactive dates that feature fully animated cutscenes. A gacha system called Wish lets you collect cards that unlock new story scenes, outfits, and stat boosts. Cards come in different rarities and affinities tied to each love interest, and you can level them up with materials earned from battles and events.
Daily activities include completing bounties for resources, checking in on the protagonists through a messaging app, and decorating your personal space with furniture and items. The game also features a photo mode where you can pose characters in various outfits and backgrounds. Limited-time events introduce special combat challenges, story chapters, and exclusive gacha banners. While primarily single-player, leaderboards track your combat scores, and occasional co-op events let you pair up with another player to tackle tougher Wanderers together.
Story
The year is 2034. Humanity has expanded into space, but strange creatures called Wanderers emerge from rifts, threatening cities. You, a Deepspace Hunter, are part of an elite force trained to eliminate these threats. Your first mission brings you to the city of Azur, where you encounter Xavier, a mysterious hunter with a hidden past. As you investigate the source of the rifts, you also meet Zayne, a calm and collected doctor who seems to know more than he lets on, and Rafayel, an enigmatic artist with a connection to the sea. The story unfolds through main story chapters, each mixing combat missions with narrative cutscenes and interactive dialogue choices that affect your bond with each character.
Later, a fourth love interest, Sylus, is introduced as a rival hunter with his own agenda. The overarching plot involves a secret organization called the Council, ancient artifacts, and a looming catastrophe tied to the Wanderer rifts. Each love interest has a personal storyline that delves into their backstory and motivations, revealed through card memories and special events. The narrative balances romance with sci-fi mystery, and player choices influence which character's story path deepens, though the main plot remains linear.
