Cardinal Sako's leadership has been recognized through his elevation to the cardinalate and his role as Patriarch of Baghdad. He is respected internationally as a leading voice for Middle Eastern Christianity and interfaith dialogue.

AwardsCardinal Sako's honors are primarily ecclesiastical. He was created a Cardinal-Priest by Pope Francis in 2018, with the titular church of San Beato Giuseppe Allamano in Rome. He was elected Patriarch of Baghdad in 2013, the highest office in the Chaldean Catholic Church.
