    About

The Los Angeles Chargers kicked off their 2026 season with a start that has already etched them into the record books for all the wrong reasons. After falling to the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2, the team sits winless and faces a daunting matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. Reports from late September describe the offensive scheme under new head coach Mike McDaniel as a disaster, with the running game dropping to near all-time lows while critics question if the season is effectively over.

This current turmoil marks a sharp departure from the franchise's golden eras. The team once dominated the AFL landscape with Dan Fouts leading the explosive Air Coryell offense in the late 1970s and early 1980s. That era produced legends like LaDainian Tomlinson, who set rushing records during his tenure in San Diego, and Hall of Famers such as Charlie Joiner and Kellen Winslow. Despite these past glories, including AFL Western Division titles in 1963 and 1968, the club has never won a Super Bowl or an AFC Championship since merging with the NFL.

Geographic instability remains a defining trait of the organization. Founded in 1959 as an AFL charter member, the squad played its first year at Wrigley Field before moving to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. They spent 56 years in San Diego across venues like Balboa Stadium and Dignity Health Sports Park until returning to Southern California in 2017 to share SoFi Stadium in Inglewood with the Rams. Their rivalry with the Las Vegas Raiders, known as the I-80 War when both teams were in the Bay Area, continues to fuel intense competition within the AFC West division.

    History

The franchise began play in 1960 as one of the original eight teams of the American Football League. They secured the AFL Western Division title in 1963 and reached the first AFL Championship Game that same year, though they lost to the Boston Patriots. A second championship appearance followed in 1968 against the Oakland Raiders. Following the 1970 merger, the team struggled to replicate its early success, often finishing near the bottom of the standings despite occasional playoff appearances.

San Diego became synonymous with the Chargers for over five decades. The arrival of quarterback Dan Fouts in 1973 transformed the team into a high-flying offensive powerhouse. His connection with receivers like Charlie Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow defined the Air Coryell system. The 1980s saw the team reach the AFC Championship game twice, but losses to the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos kept the Lombardi Trophy out of reach.

LaDainian Tomlinson emerged as the face of the franchise in the 2000s. He set the single-season rushing record with 28 touchdowns in 2006 and earned MVP honors that year. Despite individual accolades, the team failed to advance past the divisional round of the playoffs during his prime. The franchise moved back to Los Angeles in 2017, sharing SoFi Stadium with the Rams. Recent years have seen significant coaching changes and roster turnover as the organization attempts to rebuild after a difficult 2026 campaign marked by an 0-2 start and offensive struggles under Mike McDaniel.
