Lord Farquaad

Lord Farquaad ruled the kingdom of Duloc with an iron fist. He banished all fairy tale creatures from his lands to create what he saw as a perfect society. This decision set the entire story in motion when the displaced creatures flooded Shrek's swamp.

Farquaad was the son of a human mother and a fairy father. He spent his life ashamed of this mixed heritage and his unusually short stature. That shame turned into hatred for anything magical or different. [edit]

Farquaad came across as arrogant, vain, and ruthless. He obsessed over order and perfection while hiding deep insecurity about his height. His temper flared easily and he showed no real empathy for others.

Farquaad first appeared when Shrek came to demand his swamp back. He struck a deal with the ogre: rescue Princess Fiona and the swamp would be cleared of fairy tale creatures. Once Shrek delivered Fiona, Farquaad planned to marry her immediately to become a legitimate king.

At the wedding Shrek interrupted and confessed his feelings for Fiona. Farquaad ordered their execution but the dragon burst in and swallowed him whole. His crown tumbled to the floor as the ultimate punchline. Later rides and specials brought him back as a ghost still seeking revenge but he never changed or learned from his mistakes.[edit]

Fans love Farquaad as one of the most quotable and meme worthy villains in animation. His combination of petty tyranny and physical comedy made him an instant icon when Shrek hit theaters in 2001. People still use his name as shorthand for insecure authoritarian behavior more than twenty years later.

The character sparked endless TikTok videos debating whether he was right to banish magical creatures and analyzing his tragic fairy heritage. His death scene remains one of the funniest villain exits in family film history.
