Overview
Little Nightmares, a puzzle-platform horror adventure from Swedish studio Tarsier Studios and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, dropped players into the unsettling world of the Maw in April 2017. This underwater vessel, a grotesque floating resort, serves as the playground for Six, a small girl in a yellow raincoat who is driven by an insatiable hunger. The game's horror comes not from jump scares but from its oppressive atmosphere, eerie sound design, and the sheer scale of its monstrous inhabitants. Players guide Six through a series of environmental puzzles, often requiring stealth and quick thinking to avoid being caught by the game's nightmarish denizens, such as the long-armed Janitor or the blind, child-hunting Guests.
The game initially launched on PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch version following in May 2018. A Google Stadia port arrived in June 2020, and mobile versions for iOS and iPadOS, published by Playdigious, appeared in December 2023. An upgraded version, titled Little Nightmares Enhanced Edition, was released in 2025. Critics praised the game for its striking art direction, chilling soundscape, and memorable, if minimal, storytelling. It earned a solid reputation as a standout in the horror genre, appealing to players who appreciate atmospheric dread over action-heavy scares.
Little Nightmares stands as the first entry in a growing universe, with the prequel Little Nightmares II arriving in 2021 and a third installment, Little Nightmares III, developed by Supermassive Games, planned for 2025. The series has carved a niche for itself with its distinctive blend of childlike innocence and mature horror themes, making it a favorite among fans of the genre.
Gameplay
Little Nightmares strips away combat entirely. Six can run, climb, and hide, but she has no weapons. The core loop is about solving environmental puzzles and sneaking past enemies. The Janitor, a blind creature with impossibly long arms, patrols the lower decks. The Guests, bloated and faceless, feast in the dining hall. Each encounter demands patience and timing. One wrong step and Six is caught, leading to a grim game-over screen.
The game's horror is built on scale. Six stands barely a foot tall in a world of towering furniture and cavernous rooms. The camera lingers on her tiny frame against vast, shadowy spaces. Sound design does heavy lifting: creaking metal, distant growls, and a haunting ambient score by Tobias Lilja. The result is a constant, gnawing tension that never lets up.
Story
Six wakes up in the Maw, a vast underwater vessel that serves as a macabre resort for the wealthy and corrupt. She has no memory of how she got there, only a gnawing hunger. The story unfolds through environmental clues, with no dialogue. Players piece together the Maw's dark purpose through scattered drawings, faded photographs, and the behavior of its inhabitants. The blind Guests are fed something terrible, and the Janitor collects children for reasons that become chillingly clear.
Six's journey takes her from the claustrophobic engine room to the opulent dining hall, where she witnesses the Guests gorging themselves. She finally confronts the Lady, the enigmatic ruler of the Maw, who controls the ship with a mysterious power. In the climax, Six defeats her and escapes the Maw, but the ending is ambiguous. A final scene shows Six's hunger consuming her, hinting at a darker transformation. The story leaves many questions open, deliberately inviting interpretation and setting the stage for the sequel.
