    About This Album

Madonna's second studio album, Like a Virgin, arrived on November 12, 1984, via Sire Records, and it didn't just build on her debut, it launched her into a different stratosphere. Produced by Nile Rodgers, fresh off David Bowie's Let's Dance, the record swapped the synth-pop sheen of her first outing for a punchier, dance-floor-ready sound. Rodgers brought in his former Chic bandmates Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson, giving the tracks a tight, funky backbone. Madonna co-wrote four songs with ex-boyfriend Stephen Bray, including the title track and the brassy kiss-off "Material Girl", and handpicked the rest, like the cover of Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore." Across nine tracks, the album plays like a confident, sassy manifesto on love, sex, and independence, delivered with a wink and a strut.

Critics were split at first, some praising Rodgers's slick production while others took aim at Madonna's thin vocals. But the public didn't care. Like a Virgin became her first number one on the Billboard 200 and the first album by a female artist to sell five million copies in the US, later earning a diamond certification. It topped charts in Germany, Italy, the UK, and beyond, and four singles hit the top five on the Hot 100. The album's impact went beyond music: her layered lace gloves, crucifix jewelry, and "Boy Toy" belt became a uniform for teenage girls everywhere. In 2023, the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry, a nod to its lasting cultural footprint.
