On February 17, 2005, Shinobu Kaitani launched a story that would redefine the psychological thriller genre in manga. The narrative thrusts Nao Kanzaki, an honest university student, into a high-stakes tournament where she receives ¥100 million only to face massive debt if she fails. This setup forces her into a world of deception and betrayal orchestrated by the shadowy Liar Game Organization. Nao teams up with Shinichi Akiyama, a brilliant former con artist and psychology graduate, to navigate these deadly games. Their partnership drives the plot as they challenge each other's moral compasses while trying to survive.

The series distinguishes itself through intricate game mechanics rooted in game theory, probability, and social engineering rather than simple luck. Each arc functions as a self-contained puzzle like One Person Vote, Seventeen Poker, or Auction, requiring participants to outmaneuver opponents while managing fragile alliances. These stories strip away societal norms to explore how extreme circumstances force choices between integrity and self-preservation. Kaitani crafted elaborate strategies for every encounter, ensuring logical consistency throughout the 19 volumes released from September 16, 2005, to April 17, 2015.

Beyond the original run, the franchise expanded significantly across multiple media formats. A live-action drama aired on Fuji TV in 2007 and again in 2009–2010, starring Eita Nagayama and Rie Miyazawa. Two films followed: Liar Game: The Final Stage in 2010 and Liar Game: Reborn in 2012. A South Korean adaptation appeared in 2014. Most recently, Madhouse produced an anime adaptation that premiered in April 2026 under directors Yuzo Sato and Asami Kawano.
