Liam Paro's breakthrough victory over Subriel Matias in June 2024 stands as one of the biggest upsets in recent boxing history. Matias was widely regarded as the boogeyman of the super lightweight division, and Paro traveled to his home turf in Puerto Rico to take the fight. The win earned him the IBF world title and put Australian boxing back on the global map. Now aiming to become a two-weight world champion, Paro is chasing a feat not achieved by an Australian-born fighter in nearly four decades.
Records & Feats
First Australian-born fighter since Jeff Fenech to win world titles in two weight divisions (if he beats Crocker)
If Paro defeats Lewis Crocker for the IBF welterweight title in June 2026, he will become the first Australian-born boxer since Jeff Fenech in 1987 to win world titles in two different weight classes across the four major sanctioning bodies.
