    Overview

Luc Besson's 1994 crime thriller follows Léon Montana, a solitary hitman operating out of a rundown New York apartment building. Jean Reno plays the titular cleaner with a quiet precision, a man who lives by a strict code and tends to his houseplant. His life upends when his neighbors are slaughtered by corrupt DEA agent Norman Stansfield, played with manic intensity by Gary Oldman. The lone survivor, 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her feature debut), finds refuge with Léon and learns his deadly trade. Besson blends the grit of New York crime with a strange tenderness, creating an action drama that feels both brutal and heartfelt. Shot on a $16 million budget, the film earned over $20 million at the box office and holds a strong 8.3 rating from over 16,000 votes. It has since become a cult classic, often discussed for its controversial portrayal of the relationship between Léon and Mathilda.

Léon Montana lives a quiet, disciplined life in a modest New York apartment. By day he sips milk, tends to his beloved potted fern, and performs routine errands. By night he works as a cleaner, a hitman for local mobster Old Tony. Léon operates with clinical efficiency, leaving no witnesses and no trace. His world is one of strict routine and emotional isolation.

Mathilda Lando lives in the same building with her dysfunctional family, a unit marked by violence and neglect. Her father skims money from a drug stash belonging to DEA agent Norman Stansfield. When Stansfield discovers the theft, he and his men massacre the Lando family in a spray of bullets. Mathilda, returning from a grocery run, walks past the open door and sees her father's body. She continues to Léon's apartment, and he reluctantly lets her in.

Mathilda quickly pieces together that Léon is a killer. Instead of fear, she feels kinship. She learns that Stansfield murdered her four-year-old brother, and she wants revenge. She begs Léon to teach her his trade, offering to clean his apartment and cook in exchange. Léon initially refuses, but Mathilda's stubbornness wears him down. He begins training her in marksmanship, surveillance, and stealth. She accompanies him on jobs, observing his methods.

Their relationship deepens as Mathilda brings warmth into Léon's sterile life. She teaches him to read, plays charades, and coaxes him into sleeping in a real bed. Léon, in turn, becomes fiercely protective. He gives her a piggy bank and tells her to save money for a fresh start. But Mathilda's desire for vengeance grows. She sneaks off to the DEA building, posing as a delivery girl, and attempts to kill Stansfield. Léon intercepts her and rescues her, but Stansfield now knows Mathilda is alive and connected to Léon.

Stansfield, a sadistic opera lover with a cocaine habit, becomes obsessed with eliminating both of them. He traces Mathilda through Old Tony and lays a trap. Léon realizes they are cornered. He instructs Mathilda to take his plant and escape through a ventilation shaft, promising to meet her later at a restaurant. He then prepares for a final confrontation.
