Leiden University

Leiden University was founded on February 8, 1575, by William the Silent during the Dutch Revolt. Legend has it that the citizens of Leiden were offered a choice between a university and a tax exemption as a reward for their resistance against the Spanish siege of 1574; they chose the university.
