Lego

Lego began in 1932 when Ole Kirk Christiansen, a carpenter in Billund, Denmark, started making wooden toys and household goods. The name, taken from the Danish phrase "leg godt" (play well), was adopted in 1934. The company moved into plastic toys in 1947 and launched its first interlocking bricks in 1949, inspired by Hilary Page's Kiddicraft blocks. The modern brick design, with its tube-and-stud system, was patented in 1958. That same year, after a fire destroyed the woodworking department, Godtfred Christiansen, Ole's son, decided to end wooden toy production and focus entirely on the plastic system.

Over the decades, Lego grew from a small Danish workshop into the world's largest toy company by revenue, a position it has held since surpassing Mattel in 2015. The product line expanded from basic bricks into themed sets, licensed collaborations with franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel, and sub-brands such as DUPLO for toddlers and Lego Education for classrooms. The company also ventured into video games, films, and ten Legoland theme parks worldwide. Nearly 60 percent of its catalog is renewed each year, and the adult market, known as kidults, now accounts for about 30 percent of sales.

Lego remains privately owned by the Kristiansen family through their investment firm Kirkbi, which holds 75 percent of the company; the Lego Foundation owns the rest. In 2024, Lego reported revenue of 74.3 billion Danish kroner (roughly US$10.8 billion) and employed over 31,000 people. The company maintains a strong digital presence, runs the Lego Ideas platform where fans submit and vote on new sets, and has invested in Epic Games. Despite occasional controversies over gender marketing and environmental concerns, Lego continues to emphasize its core values of imagination, creativity, and quality. [edit]
