Lee Chang-sub

Lee Chang-sub is a South Korean singer and musical actor best known as the lead vocalist of the boy group BTOB. Born in Suwon, he has built a reputation as one of K-pop's most stable live vocalists while simultaneously carving out a successful solo career in music and theater. His voice is often described as emotional and powerful, earning him the nickname "vocalist's vocalist" among fans and critics alike.

As of late 2026, Chang-sub continues to release solo music, including his 2024 album 1991 and a new EP released that August. He also runs his own vocal academy, the Chang-Ggo Training Centre, which he founded in 2023 to mentor aspiring singers. Despite facing recent public scrutiny over remarks made on a variety show, he remains an active figure in the entertainment industry with a dedicated fanbase. [edit]

Lee Chang-sub was born on February 26, 1991, in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, where he spent his childhood developing a deep love for singing. Unlike many idols who entered large agency training systems immediately after middle school, Chang-sub participated in local singing competitions during his high school years. His talent became evident early on, leading him to pursue music with serious intent before he ever stepped foot in a major studio.

His path to stardom began when he auditioned for Cube Entertainment in 2009. The selection process was rigorous, and Chang-sub had to prove his vocal stability and emotional delivery against hundreds of other candidates. After three years of intense training, he was selected as one of the seven members of the debut group BTOB. During these formative years, he honed the technical skills that would later define his solo performances, learning to balance the demands of idol choreography with the precision required for complex ballads. [edit]

BTOB debuted on March 21, 2012, with the mini-album First Bloom, and Chang-sub quickly emerged as the group's lead vocalist. His distinctive tone became a signature element of their sound, particularly in their ballad-heavy tracks. In 2014, he expanded his reach by joining the sub-unit BTOB-BLUE, which focused on R&B and emotional ballads, further cementing his status as a premier vocalist in the industry.

Chang-sub launched his solo career in 2017 with the digital single "At the End." That same year, he made his theatrical debut playing the role of Goo Jun-pyo in the Korean musical adaptation of Boys Over Flowers. This role showcased his ability to act and sing simultaneously, proving his versatility beyond the stage. Over the following years, he contributed numerous OSTs to popular dramas and released solo albums like My Moment in 2021.

In 2023, he took a significant step toward long-term industry contribution by founding the Chang-Ggo Training Centre in Suwon. The academy provides vocal coaching to aspiring artists, reflecting his desire to give back to the community that supported him. His musical journey continued into 2024 with the release of the album 1991, named after his birth year, and a critically acclaimed cover of Can's "Heavenly Fate." As of 2026, he remains active with new releases despite navigating a period of public controversy regarding his behavior on a web variety show. [edit]

Chang-sub is generally perceived as a sincere and talented artist with a slightly awkward but endearing personality. Known for his clean aesthetic and professional demeanor, he has recently shown a more comedic side through variety shows, though this has occasionally led to controversy. Fans appreciate his honesty about personal struggles, such as his health issues and the pressures of the industry. [edit]

The fandom for BTOB is collectively known as Melody, and Chang-sub does not have a separate official fandom name. However, fans frequently refer to him as "Changsub-ah" or "Vocal Master." The fanbase is highly organized, organizing streaming campaigns for his solo tracks and creating fan art. They celebrate his birthday on February 26 with charity drives in his name. Chang-sub interacts with fans through live streams and fan meetings, often discussing his vocal techniques and sharing stories from his training days. [edit]

He revealed in an interview that the property's price had surprisingly not increased, allowing him to buy it at a reasonable rate. He also has a close relationship with his maternal aunt, Seonjae, whom he kept hidden from the public eye for some time due to her veneration within certain communities.

His vocal prowess is legendary among fans, who often cite his ability to perform complex songs without backing tracks as a testament to his skill. In 2026, he disclosed that hair loss medication caused unexpected side effects, including breast tissue development, which he described as a shocking experience. He also famously stated that if you cannot lose weight, you are cut from the industry, highlighting the harsh realities of K-pop standards. [edit]
