Damião's honours list is short but it has real weight at both ends of his career. At 22 he outscored every striker at the London Olympics, six goals across the tournament, and came home with a silver medal after Brazil lost the final to Mexico. Nearly a decade later, at 32 and written off by plenty of people in Brazil, he was voted into the J.League Best XI for 2021 with Kawasaki Frontale. That second honour is the one that says the most about him. Very few Brazilian strikers who leave Europe without making it go on to earn a team-of-the-season spot in a completely different league eight years later.
