Markkanen's 2023 season was historic: he became the first Finnish player to be named an NBA All-Star and the first to win the Most Improved Player Award. His selection as Finnish Athlete of the Year in 2023 marked the first time a basketball player received that national honor. He also led the FIBA U20 EuroBasket Division B in scoring and rebounding in 2016, earning MVP honors. At Arizona, he was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection, showcasing his talent early.
