Late Registration

Released on August 30, 2005, Late Registration arrived as the second studio album from Kanye West and immediately signaled a departure from the sped-up soul samples that defined his debut. Working alongside producer Jon Brion, West assembled a 20-piece orchestra to weave classical instruments like celestas, harpsichords, and Chinese bells into hip-hop beats. This collaboration created an elaborate soundscape categorized under progressive rap and alternative hip-hop, allowing the rapper to tackle subjects ranging from institutional racism and the blood diamond trade to the high cost of healthcare.

The record debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, moving 860,000 copies in its first week and eventually earning five-times platinum certification from the RIAA. It spawned four major singles including "Gold Digger" featuring Jamie Foxx, which became West's first chart-topper on the Hot 100. Critics praised the project for its elegant ambition and orchestral sophistication, leading to eight Grammy nominations at the 48th Annual Awards ceremony where West took home Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance for "Gold Digger".
