Pickett Jr.'s honors are unusual for a college athlete: they recognize a single act of courage rather than on-field performance. The U.S. Army's Soldier's Medal and the Army West Point Heroism Award place him in a small group of cadets cited for lifesaving action, and the City of Raleigh's proclamation of Larry Pickett Day marks a local civic distinction shared with his father.
