    Overview

Cole Phelps, a decorated Marine returning from the Pacific theater in 1947, joins the Los Angeles Police Department to investigate crimes that expose deep corruption within the city. The narrative follows his ascent through the Patrol, Traffic, Homicide, Vice, and Arson bureaus as he unravels a complex web of murder, drug trafficking, and political intrigue. Players must gather physical evidence at crime scenes and analyze timelines before confronting suspects in interrogations where truth is hidden in micro-expressions.

Team Bondi developed the title using a modified RAGE engine to support MotionScan technology, which captured actors with 32 cameras simultaneously to record every facial nuance. This technical achievement allowed for a unique gameplay loop where success depended on reading subtle shifts in eye movement or lip tension rather than following preset dialogue trees. Aaron Staton portrayed Phelps, bringing a specific blend of charm and vulnerability to the lead role after developers considered Jon Hamm for the part.

The game launched globally on May 17, 2011, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, selling over four million copies within its first month despite controversy surrounding the development studio's workplace culture. Critics highlighted the atmospheric score by Simon Hale and Andrew Hale alongside the innovative interrogation system, though some found the third-person shooting mechanics repetitive. It became the first video game selected for the Tribeca Film Festival, recognizing its cinematic storytelling approach.

    Gameplay

Investigation drives the core experience as players collect fingerprints, bullet casings, and witness statements to reconstruct events. The defining mechanic involves questioning suspects where MotionScan technology reveals lies through involuntary facial tics. Success requires deducing the correct accusation based on these visual cues rather than guessing from dialogue options. While the open world allows for driving sequences and gunfights, these elements serve the primary goal of solving puzzles presented by each case file.

    Story

In 1947, Cole Phelps transitions from military service to the LAPD, starting in the Patrol Bureau where he handles routine calls. He quickly transfers to Traffic, then Homicide, where he investigates the murder of a young woman that leads to a morphine ring involving his former squadmates. The plot expands into Vice and Arson divisions as Phelps uncovers connections between organized crime, corrupt politicians, and the film industry. His personal journey reflects the era's social tensions while he hunts down killers across a meticulously recreated Los Angeles.
