    About

JR Kyushu is the railway operator that keeps Kyushu moving. Born from the breakup of Japanese National Railways in 1987, it inherited a tough hand: 28.8 billion yen in losses and a network full of lightly used rural lines, all while highways were eating into ridership. But the company adapted. Today it runs sleek Shinkansen bullet trains, commuter lines, and a fleet of luxury sightseeing trains that have become tourist attractions in their own right. The most famous of those is the Seven Stars in Kyushu, a seven-car sleeper train that crosses the island in style, complete with a lounge car and observation deck.

Trains are only part of the story. JR Kyushu also runs hotels, restaurants (including the Train d'Or bakery chain that started in 1992), drugstores, and even fish and mushroom farms. These non-rail businesses now bring in about 60% of the company's sales and most of its profits. Hotel revenue alone hit ¥15.0 billion in a recent year, and on-train dining pulled in ¥5.0 billion. The company also operated the Beetle hydrofoil between Fukuoka and Busan, South Korea, from 1991 until it discontinued the service in 2024.

JR Kyushu went public in October 2016 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, making it the last of the major JR companies to list. Its headquarters are in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, and its network stretches across the island. The company faces real challenges: Japan's population is shrinking, and budget airlines compete for passengers on the longer routes. But JR Kyushu keeps investing in safety, slope countermeasures at 17 locations in the fiscal year ended March 2024, and in customer loyalty through its JR Kyupo points program, which feeds marketing data back into the business.

Who is the CEO of JR Kyushu?
The current President and CEO is Yoji Furumiya. He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1985 and moved to JR Kyushu when it was founded in 1987. He attended all 12 board meetings in the fiscal year ended March 2024.
How much is JR Kyushu worth?

JR Kyushu vs JR East — which is better for tourists?
It depends on where you're going. JR Kyushu serves the southern island of Kyushu with its Shinkansen and scenic D&S sightseeing trains like the Seven Stars in Kyushu. JR East covers Tokyo and northern Japan. JR Kyushu's rail pass is generally cheaper and ideal for exploring Kyushu's hot springs, volcanoes, and coastal scenery.
Is JR Kyushu still in business?
Yes, absolutely. JR Kyushu continues to operate intercity rail, Shinkansen, hotels, restaurants, and drugstores across Kyushu. It discontinued the Beetle hydrofoil to South Korea in 2024, but its core rail and non-rail businesses remain active. The company is publicly traded and publishes annual integrated reports.
