Overview
Origin Story
Kung Lao is a Shaolin monk of the White Lotus Society, born centuries after his great-great-grandfather, the original Kung Lao, who defeated the sorcerer Shang Tsung in the first Mortal Kombat tournament 500 years ago. He grew up in the Wu Shi Academy, training alongside his friend Liu Kang. The weight of his ancestor's legacy pressed on him from a young age, as he was constantly compared to the legendary champion. When Liu Kang was seemingly killed by Shang Tsung after the first tournament, Kung Lao entered the second Mortal Kombat tournament to avenge his friend and prove his own worth. His first appearance in Mortal Kombat II established him as a skilled fighter with a razor-rimmed hat, a weapon passed down through his family.
Personality
Kung Lao is fiercely proud of his lineage but often insecure about living up to his ancestor's reputation. He carries a chip on his shoulder, especially regarding Liu Kang, who was chosen by Raiden as Earthrealm's champion. Despite this, he is loyal and honorable, following the Shaolin path of discipline and righteousness. He can be cocky and hot-headed in battle, but his heart is in the right place. Over time, he learns to define his own legacy rather than chasing his ancestor's shadow.
Story Arc
In Mortal Kombat II, Kung Lao defeats Shang Tsung but his victory is overshadowed by Liu Kang's defeat of Shao Kahn. This seeds a rivalry that simmers through the series. In Mortal Kombat 3, he is killed off-screen by Shao Kahn's forces, but resurrected in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance by the Elder Gods to serve as a protector. In Mortal Kombat: Deception, he becomes a mentor to Kenshi, his cousin. The 2011 reboot retells the original trilogy, where Kung Lao is killed by Shao Kahn during the tournament, but his spirit aids Raiden. In Mortal Kombat 11, a younger, time-displaced Kung Lao from the past appears, allowing him to confront his own legacy. He ultimately sacrifices himself to save Earthrealm, finally proving his heroism on his own terms.
