Kratos

Kratos was born in Sparta to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods, and the mortal woman Callisto. His younger brother Deimos was kidnapped by Ares and Thanatos due to a prophecy that a marked warrior would destroy Olympus. Kratos grew up believing his brother dead and became a fierce Spartan general. He led his army to many victories, but during a battle against barbarians, Kratos was on the verge of death. In desperation, he called upon Ares, offering his soul in exchange for victory. Ares granted him power, binding the Blades of Chaos to his arms. Kratos turned the tide, but became a ruthless servant of the god of war.

After years of serving Ares, the god tricked Kratos into murdering his own wife and daughter in a temple dedicated to Athena. Horrified by his actions, Kratos renounced Ares and swore vengeance. He served the other Olympian gods for a decade, hoping to be forgiven and free from the nightmares. His skin turned ash-white from the ashes of his family, earning him the name "Ghost of Sparta." Kratos is defined by his immense rage and relentless determination. In the Greek era, he is consumed by vengeance, often acting impulsively and brutally. He is a tragic figure, haunted by his past and willing to destroy anyone who stands in his way. Yet beneath the fury lies a deep sense of guilt and a desire for justice, however twisted.

In the Norse era, Kratos has matured significantly. He is more contemplative and restrained, struggling to control his temper and learn from his mistakes. He values discipline and responsibility, especially as a father to Atreus. He is often stern and taciturn, but shows a capacity for compassion and wisdom. Kratos's story begins with his quest to kill Ares, which he accomplishes with the help of Athena. He becomes the new God of War, but his nightmares persist. He later learns he is Zeus's son and is betrayed by his father, who fears the prophecy of a marked warrior destroying Olympus. Kratos wages war against the Olympian gods, ultimately killing Zeus and releasing the power of Hope into the world. This act destroys Greece and leaves Kratos gravely wounded.

Surviving, Kratos travels to the Norse realm of Midgard, where he starts a new family with a woman named Faye. After her death, he embarks on a journey with his son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak. Along the way, Kratos learns to be a better father and confronts his past. He battles Baldur, Freya, and Thor, and eventually faces Odin during Ragnarok. Kratos chooses to spare his enemies and break the cycle of violence. He becomes the new Norse God of War, championing hope and rebuilding the realms.[edit]

Kratos is widely regarded as one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. The Greek-era games were praised for their epic scale and visceral combat, though some critics noted Kratos's one-dimensional rage. The Norse-era reboot, however, earned universal acclaim for deepening his character, making him a complex father figure. Christopher Judge's performance won numerous awards, including Best Performance at The Game Awards 2018 and 2022. The character has been featured in multiple 'greatest video game characters' lists by IGN, Guinness World Records, and others. His evolution from a vengeful anti-hero to a wise, redeemed god has been praised as one of gaming's best character arcs.[edit]
