Kōji Yusa

Kōji Yusa arrived in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto on August 12, 1968, launching a career that would define the sound of modern anime. He works as a freelance voice actor and narrator, bringing his distinct baritone to characters across dozens of genres. His journey began in the Kansai region, where he honed his craft before moving into the national spotlight. Over nearly three decades, he has become a staple in the industry, voicing over 400 roles in television and film without ever relying on a single agency for too long. Critics and fans often point to his performance as Gin Ichimaru in Bleach as a career-defining moment. The character's shifting personality from cheerful captain to cold-blooded killer required a vocal range that Yusa delivered with chilling precision. He also lent his voice to Shadow the Hedgehog in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, capturing the anti-hero's brooding intensity for English and Japanese audiences alike. Other standout roles include Urataros in Kamen Rider Den-O, where he played a lovable but dangerous time-traveling spirit, and Eiji Sasazuka in Majin Tantei Nōgami Neuro. His work extends beyond animation to live-action tokusatsu series like Zettai Karen Children and Yowamushi Pedal, proving his versatility spans both human and fantastical beings. The sheer volume of his output remains impressive. Across more than 50 films and hundreds of TV appearances, Yusa maintains a consistent presence in the dubbing world. He voiced Raideen Owl in Choja Raideen and took on multiple roles in Battle Vixens, including Zuo Ci and Xu Huang. Even in niche projects, he brings a professional polish that elevates the material. His ability to switch between menacing antagonists and comedic sidekicks keeps casting directors returning for him year after year.[edit]
