    Overview

Spring break in Japan usually means relaxation for high schoolers, but Koyomi Araragi found himself staring down a blood-chillingly beautiful woman lying wounded in an alley. This moment marked the beginning of Kizumonogatari, a dark prequel that recontextualizes the entire Monogatari franchise. Written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by VOFAN, the novel arrived on May 7, 2008, through Kodansha Box to reveal how Koyomi lost his humanity.

The narrative centers on Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, a powerful vampire betrayed by her own subordinates and stripped of her strength. To save her life, Koyomi donates his own blood, inadvertently transforming into a half-vampire himself. This sacrifice sets off a desperate quest to restore her power and reclaim his human status, leading him into deadly confrontations with the Three Beasts who orchestrated the betrayal.

Unlike the dialogue-heavy comedy of later entries, this volume leans heavily into supernatural horror and emotional stakes. It serves as the chronological prologue to the series while occupying the second position in the publication order of the main arcs. The story explores themes of identity and sacrifice, asking whether a monster can retain its soul when forced to act like one.
