Abel Tesfaye arrived at his major-label debut with Kiss Land, a project released on September 10, 2013 through XO and Republic Records. The album expanded the dark, atmospheric R&B foundation laid by his 2011 mixtapes into a cohesive narrative about fame, isolation, and emotional detachment. Production relied heavily on moody synthesizers and sparse arrangements crafted by DannyBoyStyles, DaHeala, and Tesfaye himself to create a soundscape that felt both luxurious and cold.

The record features fourteen tracks that explore the darker side of celebrity life without resorting to party anthems. Collaborators included Drake on "Live For" and Future on "All I Know," adding distinct textures to the project's somber tone. While initial reviews were polarized regarding the repetitive lyrics and depressive atmosphere, the album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of approximately 95,000 copies.

Commercial performance continued steadily over the following years, reaching 273,000 domestic units by August 2015. Singles such as "Kiss Land," "Belong to the World," and "Live For" drove radio play, while "Wanderlust" received alternative airplay.
