Kino's Journey
"The Beautiful World"
Keiichi Sigsawa
Overview
Keiichi Sigsawa launched Kino's Journey in March 2000 with the first volume arriving from ASCII Media Works just months later. This light novel series features a nameless traveler and her sentient motorcycle, Hermes, who visit strange nations for exactly three days before moving on. Each stop reveals a unique society with customs that challenge the pair's understanding of normalcy. The original run appeared in the magazine Dengeki hp before expanding into twenty-four collected volumes by September 2025. Kouhaku Kuroboshi provided the distinctive artwork that defined the early aesthetic of this philosophical adventure.
The franchise expanded quickly beyond print. A thirteen-episode anime adaptation aired on WOWOW in 2003, followed by two visual novels for the PlayStation 2 and two theatrical films released in 2005 and 2007. Fans also received a spin-off titled Gakuen Kino, which reimagined the characters in a school setting starting in 2006. A second anime series returned in late 2017 to bring new stories to life, while various art books and drama CDs filled out the collection.
