    About

Kings of Leon are an American rock band from Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and as of 2026 they remain an active four-piece: Caleb Followill on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, his brother Nathan on drums, their younger brother Jared on bass, and cousin Matthew on lead guitar. No member has left the group since its formation in 1999, which makes them unusual among bands of their generation and commercial scale. Their tenth studio album, O My Beloved, is scheduled for release on November 6, 2026, preceded by the singles "My Whole World" and "KOYSAR."

The band's commercial footprint is split between two markets. In the United Kingdom they have placed nine singles in the Top 40, and their first three albums all reached the UK Top 5. In the United States, Only by the Night (2008) became their first platinum album, and every studio album they have released has appeared on the Billboard 200. "Sex on Fire," "Use Somebody" and "Notion" each topped Billboard's Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, and five of their singles have reached the Billboard Hot 100.

What distinguishes them is lineage and restraint. The Followills are family, they write their own material, and their sound has shifted deliberately across a quarter century, from the raw Southern garage rock of their early records to the widescreen anthems that filled arenas in the late 2000s and the new wave and electronic textures of later albums. Fans tend to arrive through one of two doors, the radio hits or the early club records, and stay for the live show, which the band has kept on the road through every album cycle, including a newly announced 2027 run through Australia and New Zealand.

    Formation Story

The Followill brothers did not grow up with rock music. Their father, Leon Followill, was a Pentecostal preacher, and the family moved constantly across the American South while he ministered. Secular records were largely absent from the household until the boys were teenagers, and the story goes that they encountered rock and roll properly only after their father was defrocked, an event the family has discussed publicly and which followed the brothers' growing interest in music outside the church.

Caleb and Nathan had been playing together in various configurations before 1999, when the band took shape in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, a suburb east of Nashville. Jared, the youngest, was still a teenager when he joined on bass, and their cousin Matthew Followill completed the lineup on lead guitar. The name came from their grandfather and namesake, Leon, and the four of them settled into a lineup that has not changed since.

Early demos attracted attention in Nashville and then in the UK, where the band signed with Hand Me Down, an imprint associated with Columbia. Their debut album, Youth and Young Manhood, arrived in July 2003, produced by Ethan Johns, and drew on Southern rock, garage rock and the blues. British critics took to it quickly, and the follow-up, Aha Shake Heartbreak (2004), deepened the band's UK following while the American audience remained smaller. The turning point came with Because of the Times in 2007, which gave them their first UK No. 1 album and a sound built for bigger rooms. The next record would make them a household act on both sides of the Atlantic.

    Musical Style

The band's first two albums, Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak, were built on Southern rock and garage rock with a strong blues pull, recorded with a raw, roomy feel and Caleb Followill's drawled, slightly frayed delivery. From Because of the Times (2007) onward the arrangements widened: more reverb, more layered guitars, choruses designed for festival fields. Only by the Night (2008) pushed that approach furthest, with "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" trading the garage grit for stadium-scale melody.

Later records moved in different directions. Come Around Sundown (2010) brought in new wave and a sun-bleached atmosphere, Mechanical Bull (2013) returned to a leaner rock attack, and Walls (2016) and When You See Yourself (2021) added electronic textures and a more measured pace. Can We Please Have Fun (2024) pulled the sound back toward the band's live energy, and the O My Beloved singles suggest a continuation of that stripped-back approach. Lyrically, Caleb writes about family, faith, restlessness and the road, often with a wry, plainspoken tone rather than grand statements.

    Cultural Impact

Kings of Leon arrived at a moment when American rock radio was short on bands with both critical standing and mass appeal, and Only by the Night filled that gap. "Use Somebody" crossed over far beyond rock formats, becoming a staple of pop playlists and a song covered by dozens of artists, from Pixie Lott to a cappella groups. The album's nine-times-platinum certification in Australia and its status as the country's best-selling album of 2008 illustrates how far the band's reach extended outside the US and UK.

Their festival bookings tell a similar story: Glastonbury headline slots and top billing at Reading & Leeds placed them among the rock acts that promoters trusted to close a night. The band's image, three brothers and a cousin from Tennessee with a strict religious background, gave the music press a narrative that ran for years, and their occasional public tensions, including Caleb's 2011 onstage collapse and the brief tour cancellation that followed, kept them in the tabloids as well as the reviews. Their songs have been licensed widely across film, television and video games, which has introduced the catalog to listeners who never bought an album.

    Fandom Culture

    Fandom: Kings of Leon fans

Kings of Leon have no official fandom name, no lightstick and no fan color. Their audience is simply described as Kings of Leon fans, and the culture around the band is closer to standard rock fandom than to the organized structures of pop: gig-going, vinyl collecting, and long-running online forums and social media communities. The band's official channels, Instagram @kingsofleon, X @KingsOfLeon and a YouTube channel that hosts videos for "Use Somebody," "Sex on Fire," "Radioactive," "KOYSAR," "My Whole World" and "Cold Blue Dawn," are the main points of contact between the group and its listeners.

Live shows are the center of the fan experience. The band has toured behind nearly every album, and the announcement of the 2027 Australia and New Zealand dates with Ocean Alley drew immediate attention in those markets, where Only by the Night had made the band unusually big. Australian fans in particular have a long relationship with the group, dating to the album's record-setting sales there.

    Awards Won (19)

Kings of Leon have won four Grammy Awards from twelve nominations, the first of them in 2010 when "Use Somebody" took Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, while "Sex on Fire" won Best Rock Song. They also won two BRIT Awards in 2008, for International Group and International Album for Only by the Night, and "Use Somebody" earned an MTV Video Music Award and an NME Award for Best Single.

    Trivia

The band is named after their grandfather, Leon Followill. The three brothers and their cousin have never had a lineup change in more than 25 years. Their father, a Pentecostal preacher, was defrocked after the brothers' interest in rock music became known, a story the family has told in interviews. Only by the Night was the best-selling album in Australia in 2008 and has been certified nine times platinum there. Caleb Followill collapsed onstage in Dallas in July 2011, forcing the band to cancel the remainder of a US tour; they resumed activity the following year.
