Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts is a series of action role-playing games developed and published by Square Enix (originally Square) in collaboration with The Walt Disney Company. Conceived by Tetsuya Nomura and Shinji Hashimoto, the series debuted in 2002 on PlayStation 2 and has since grown into a multi-platform franchise spanning thirteen titles. The core gameplay combines real-time hack-and-slash combat with RPG elements like leveling, magic, and summonable Disney characters. Later games introduced a customizable command deck system.

The story follows Sora, a boy from the Destiny Islands, who wields a Keyblade to fight creatures of darkness called Heartless. Joined by Donald Duck and Goofy, Sora travels through Disney-themed worlds to find his lost friends Riku and Kairi while opposing the villainous Organization XIII. The narrative expands across spin-offs featuring other protagonists like Roxas and Aqua, creating a complex interconnected lore.

As of March 2022, the series has shipped over 36 million copies worldwide. The original game sold 5.6 million units, while Kingdom Hearts III sold 5 million in its first week. Critical reception has been consistently positive, with Metacritic scores of 85 for the original, 87 for Kingdom Hearts II, and 83 for Kingdom Hearts III. Kingdom Hearts blends real-time combat with RPG mechanics. Players control Sora in third-person, using the Keyblade for melee attacks, magic spells, and summoning Disney characters for assistance. The series evolved from a simple menu-based combat system in the original to a more fluid command deck system in Birth by Sleep and later titles. Each world offers exploration, puzzle-solving, and boss battles. Multiplayer appears in select titles: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days supports four-player co-op, and Birth by Sleep includes an arena mode.[edit]

When darkness falls, Sora obtains the Keyblade and embarks on a journey with Donald and Goofy to find his friends and seal the keyholes of Disney worlds. They clash with Maleficent and later the enigmatic Organization XIII, a group of Nobodies seeking to reclaim hearts.
