About This Album
Ruel's second studio album, released on 10 November 2023 through RCA Records, functions as a direct sequel to his debut 4th Wall, completing a two-part creative arc that captures the messiness and vulnerability of his early twenties. The title, a metaphor for expressing frustration and passion, sets the tone for a collection that blends pop, R&B, and soul with raw, cathartic energy.
The standard edition features twelve tracks, all co-written by Ruel, with production from M-Phazes, Mark Landon, and others. Guest appearances include English singer Griff on I Don't Wanna Be Like You and Australian rapper Manu Crooks on Other Side. A deluxe edition followed on 23 February 2024, adding five bonus tracks including the interlude Screaming.
Five singles preceded the album, beginning with I Don't Wanna Be Like You in June 2023 and culminating with Let The Light In on release day. The album debuted at number 2 on the ARIA Albums Chart, Ruel's highest chart position to date, and topped the ARIA Australian Artist Albums Chart. It also charted at number 8 in New Zealand and number 15 on the UK R&B Albums Chart.
Critical reception was generally positive. The Guardian awarded 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a soulful, heartfelt collection, while NME described it as a confident step forward. Pitchfork was more reserved, rating it 6.2 out of 10 and noting a lack of risk-taking. The album earned a nomination for Best Pop Release at the 2024 ARIA Awards and was shortlisted for the Australian Music Prize.
