Khalil Herbert grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida, where he developed a strong foundation in athletics during his high school years. His path to the NFL was not linear, beginning with an enrollment at the University of Kansas. He spent one season playing under head coach David Beaty before deciding to transfer schools. This move proved pivotal as he joined Virginia Tech, entering the program under head coach Justin Fuente.

At Virginia Tech, Herbert found his stride and flourished as a standout performer. The turning point came in 2020 when he became the first Hokie since 2015 to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season. He finished that campaign with 1,204 rushing yards, earning Second Team All-ACC honors as an all-purpose player and Third Team All-ACC recognition specifically for his rushing ability. These achievements solidified his reputation as a versatile back who could handle both rushing duties and return assignments, setting the stage for his entry into the professional draft. [edit]

Herbert entered the NFL landscape in 2021 after being selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round (207th overall) of the draft. He made an immediate impact during his rookie season, utilizing his speed and elusiveness to become a key contributor. From 2022 through 2023, he continued to develop as a primary backup and occasional starter while maintaining significant contributions on special teams units.

In 2024, Herbert moved to the Cincinnati Bengals via a trade involving Zack Moss, who was placed on injured reserve. He provided necessary depth to the Bengals' backfield throughout the 2025 season. The narrative shifted again in August 2026 when he signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers following roster injuries. Although he was briefly released on August 17, 2026, the team re-signed him just four days later to bolster their options. This quick turnaround highlighted his value as a versatile asset capable of performing under pressure and filling critical gaps in the lineup. [edit]
