Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways, the flag carrier of Kenya, was established in 1977 after the breakup of East African Airways. Its headquarters sit in Embakasi, Nairobi, and it operates out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The airline started as a state-owned entity but shifted to a public-private partnership after privatization in 1996, becoming the first African flag carrier to do so. Today, the Kenyan government holds a 48.9% stake, while KQ Lenders Company 2017 Ltd, owned by a consortium of banks, controls 38.1%. KLM owns 7.8%, and the remaining shares trade on the Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Uganda stock exchanges. Kenya Airways joined the SkyTeam alliance in June 2010 and has been a member of the African Airlines Association since its founding.

The airline operates a fleet of wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, serving over 50 destinations worldwide through direct flights and code-sharing partnerships. Its product offerings include Asante (Economy Class), Premier World (Business Class), cargo services, and the Msafiri Club frequent flyer program. The carrier has faced significant financial turbulence, including a period of negative equity in 2017/2018. However, it recorded an operating profit for the first time in a decade during the 2022/2023 financial year, driven by cost-cutting and rising passenger numbers. For the half-year ending June 2024, the airline reported a net loss of KES 20.5 billion (approximately $159 million).

Kenya Airways has been central to several controversies, including allegations of financial mismanagement and contentious debt restructuring that gave a bank consortium a 38.1% stake. Labor disputes with pilots over pay have also periodically disrupted operations. The Kenyan government has announced plans to fully nationalize the airline to stabilize its finances. Meanwhile, the carrier continues to expand its network, adding routes like Nairobi to New York JFK, and modernizing its fleet with fuel-efficient models such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.[edit]
