Kentucky State University

Kentucky State University opened its doors in 1886 as the State Normal School for Colored Persons, a dedicated effort to provide teacher training when educational opportunities for African Americans were virtually nonexistent. Just four years after founding, the institution earned land-grant status under the Morrill Act of 1890, expanding its scope to include agricultural and mechanical education alongside traditional academics. This early designation set it apart as one of the few HBCUs to receive such recognition shortly after its inception.

Located at 400 East Main Street in Frankfort, the university serves as the smallest public institution within the Kentucky state system. It currently enrolls approximately 2,700 students who are supported by roughly 155 full-time instructional faculty members.
