Kaufland

Kaufland is a German hypermarket chain that has become a familiar sight across much of Europe. Part of the Schwarz Gruppe, the same retail group that owns the discount supermarket Lidl, Kaufland focuses on large-format stores that offer a wide range of groceries, household goods, and electronics. The name, pronounced roughly as "KOWF-lahnt," means "buy-land" in German, reflecting its ambition to be a one-stop shopping destination.

The first Kaufland opened its doors in 1984 in Neckarsulm, a town in southwestern Germany. From there, it expanded rapidly across what was then West Germany, and after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it moved into the former East Germany as well. Today, the chain operates more than 1,650 stores in eight countries: Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova. While Lidl targets budget-conscious shoppers with smaller stores, Kaufland goes for a different approach: sprawling hypermarkets that often anchor shopping centers, with a strong emphasis on fresh produce, bakery items, and a rotating selection of non-food specials.

Kaufland has positioned itself as a family-friendly retailer, with services like in-store bakeries, butcher counters, and even cafes in some locations. Its international expansion has been steady, and it has become a major player in Eastern European retail markets. The chain is known for its private-label brands, which offer competitive prices without sacrificing quality, and it has made efforts to improve sustainability by reducing plastic packaging and supporting local suppliers.
