Katsuhito Ishii's work has earned critical acclaim and festival recognition, particularly for The Taste of Tea, which won four major awards and was selected for the Cannes Directors' Fortnight. His animated short The Great Rabbit also won at Sitges. While his films have not achieved mainstream box office success, they are celebrated in international festival circuits and among cult cinema enthusiasts for their originality and artistic vision.

AwardsIshii's film The Taste of Tea won the Grand Prize at the Yokohama Film Festival, Best Film at Nippon Connection, and a Special Jury Prize at Fantasporto in 2005. He also won Best Director at the Japanese Professional Movie Awards for the same film. His animated short The Great Rabbit won Best Animated Short at the Sitges Film Festival in 2014.
