Karyn Kusama

Karyn Kiyoko Kusama arrived in the world on March 21, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York. She carved out a distinct path as an American filmmaker who blends sharp character studies with intense genre work. Her journey into feature films began with Girlfight in 2000, a sports drama that showcased her ability to handle raw human emotion. The film earned her the Best Director award and the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, alongside an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her first feature. That early success set a high bar for her career, proving she could lead major projects with a unique voice. Kusama expanded her range by tackling big studio sci-fi with Æon Flux in 2005 and later finding cult status with the horror comedy Jennifer's Body in 2009. While those films defined her mid-career, she spent years working extensively in television before returning to the big screen. Her 2015 thriller The Invitation proved she could craft tension without relying on cheap jumpscares. She continued this momentum by directing a segment of the anthology XX in 2017 and starring Nicole Kidman in the crime drama Destroyer the following year. Television has become a major part of her recent output. Kusama serves as both director and executive producer on the Showtime series Yellowjackets, which premiered in 2021. Her work on the show earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations, highlighting her skill in long-form storytelling. She is also preparing to co-produce and direct the opening episodes of the third season of The Terror.
