Lehtonen's legacy is defined by his historic draft position and his longevity as a starting goaltender. He was the highest-drafted European goaltender in NHL history when the Thrashers picked him second overall in 2002, a record that still stands. Over 14 seasons, he won 310 games, placing him among the most successful Finnish goalies in NHL history. His commitment to the Stars and his graceful handling of difficult situations have earned him lasting respect from fans and peers.

AwardsLehtonen's most notable achievements came in junior and international hockey. He won a gold medal at the U18 World Junior Championships in 2002 and was named the tournament's Best Goaltender. He also earned silver at the U20 WJC in 2001 and bronze in 2000. Domestically, he won the SM-liiga championship with Jokerit in 2002. He did not win major NHL awards like the Vezina Trophy.
