Kansas City Royals

The Kansas City Royals are a professional baseball team based in Kansas City, Missouri, competing in the American League Central division of Major League Baseball. Founded in 1969 as an expansion franchise, the team quickly established itself as a contender, reaching the World Series for the first time in 1980. The Royals have won two World Series championships, in 1985 and 2015, and have made five World Series appearances overall. The team plays its home games at Kauffman Stadium, a ballpark renowned for its outfield fountain and waterfall display. The franchise is named after the American Royal, a historic livestock show and rodeo that has been held in Kansas City since 1899, as well as earlier minor-league teams that used the same name.

The Royals have a strong fan base known for its passionate support, particularly during the team's playoff runs in 2014 and 2015. The team's colors are royal blue and powder blue, the latter of which became iconic during the 1970s and 1980s and has been revived as an alternate uniform. Key traditions include the "Royals Rally" dance performed by players after home runs and the stadium's signature crown-shaped scoreboard. The Kansas City Royals were established in 1969 when Major League Baseball expanded, adding four new teams. The franchise filled the void left by the Kansas City Athletics, who had relocated to Oakland in 1967. Led by founding owner Ewing Kauffman, the Royals built a strong farm system and quickly became competitive. By 1976, they won their first division title, beginning a stretch of six playoff appearances in nine years. The team's first World Series appearance came in 1980, where they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in six games.

The Royals won their first championship in 1985, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in a seven-game series that included a controversial call in Game 6 by umpire Don Denkinger. After that peak, the team entered a long decline, posting only one winning season between 1995 and 2012. A rebuilding effort, centered on homegrown talent like Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer, culminated in back-to-back World Series appearances in 2014 and 2015. The 2014 team lost to the San Francisco Giants in seven games, but the 2015 squad swept the New York Mets to win the franchise's second title.

Following the 2015 championship, the Royals again entered a rebuilding phase, losing at least 100 games in 2018 and 2023. However, a rapid turnaround in 2024, powered by young shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and a revived pitching staff, led to an 86-76 record and a wild-card playoff berth.
