Kaiju Girl Caramelise
Spica Aoki
Overview
Kuroe Akaishi has a secret that makes high school a minefield. When her emotions spike, parts of her body turn reptilian and scaly. A childhood incident where this scared away her first crush left her withdrawn, avoiding everyone especially the popular Arata Minami. But Arata keeps approaching her, and her feelings for him trigger something bigger. She transforms into a full-blown, Godzilla-sized kaiju she later names Harudon.
The series started in Monthly Comic Alive in February 2018, with Media Factory releasing the first volume that June. Yen Press brought it to English readers in June 2019, translated by Taylor Engel with lettering by Lys Blakeslee. Author Spica Aoki, known for shōjo work, was surprised when a seinen magazine picked up her story. Her editors told her the story worked best as shōjo anyway, which explains the sparkles, heart pupils, and fashion-forward characters that fill its pages.
Later volumes reveal Kuroe is not a human with a condition but a kaiju born from an egg her mother smuggled off a remote island. Her human form is an adaptation from imprinting on a human parent as an infant. The transformation is not a metaphor for puberty but her true self breaking through. Her classmates and Arata learn the truth, and the family moves to that island to protect her. An anime adaptation by Liden Films premiered in July 2026, with an IMDb rating of 7.3 from early user reviews.
