On August 15, 1988, two local clubs in Limburg merged to form a new entity that would soon reshape Belgian football. KFC Winterslag and Waterschei Thor SV combined their resources, inheriting the matricule number 264 from Winterslag to create what is now known as Koninklijke Racing Club Genk. While the club traces its roots back to the original founding of Winterslag in 1923, the modern team began its journey with this merger.

The squad plays its home matches at the Cegeka Arena, a venue holding roughly 23,718 spectators. This stadium sits at Stadionplein 4 in Genk and has served as the fortress for the team since they secured promotion to the first division for the 1996–97 season. Since then, the club has rarely finished outside the top positions in the Belgian Pro League, establishing itself as a consistent force in domestic competitions.

Genk wears blue and white kits that reflect the industrial heritage of the region. Their success on the pitch includes five league titles won during the seasons 1998–99, 1999–00, 2000–01, 2018–19, and 2022–23. They have also claimed the Belgian Cup three times and the Super Cup four times. The fanbase, calling themselves "Genkies," maintains a passionate presence both inside and outside the stadium. The club's rise began shortly after its formation when it quickly climbed the Belgian football pyramid. By the mid-1990s, Racing Genk had earned its place in the top flight, debuting in the 1996–97 season. Their early years were marked by rapid development, culminating in their first major trophy in 1999. That year saw them secure both the league title and the Belgian Cup, a double that signaled their arrival as a serious contender.

Success continued into the turn of the millennium with back-to-back championships in 1999–00 and 2000–01. These victories established a pattern of excellence that would define the club for decades. The team returned to the summit of Belgian football in the 2018–19 season under Philippe Clement, adding another league crown to their collection. A fifth title followed in 2022–23, led by Albert Stuivenberg, who guided the squad through a dominant campaign.

Beyond domestic trophies, Genk has made regular appearances in European competition. They have navigated the UEFA Europa League group stages multiple times and advanced to knockout phases in various continental tournaments. The club serves as a vital talent pipeline, exporting players to top leagues across Europe. Notable alumni like Dries Mertens and Yannick Carrasco moved from Genk to stardom in Italy and Spain respectively, proving the academy's ability to develop world-class talent. [edit]
