When she was 11, her mother took her on a road trip to see a psychiatrist, but instead admitted her to a psychiatric hospital without her knowledge. During her stay, Jules engaged in self-harm but eventually recovered and was discharged. She began her gender transition at age 13. Her parents, David and Amy Vaughn, later divorced, prompting a move from Los Angeles to the fictional suburb of East Highland.
