Journey to the West

Journey to the West is a 16th-century Chinese novel attributed to Wu Cheng'en, first published in 1592. It runs over 2,000 pages in full translation and is considered one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature. The book blends fantasy, adventure, and satire, drawing on Chinese folk religion, Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. It has been described as the most popular literary work in East Asia, and its influence extends to modern manga, anime, and video games.

The story fictionalizes the historical pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang, who traveled from China to India in the 7th century to obtain sacred Buddhist scriptures. In the novel, Xuanzang, renamed Tang Sanzang, is protected on his journey by three disciples: the mischievous and powerful monkey Sun Wukong, the gluttonous pig demon Zhu Bajie, and the river monster Sha Wujing. They also ride a white dragon horse. The narrative begins with Sun Wukong's origin, born from a stone egg on Flower Fruit Mountain, and his rebellion against heaven, which earns him the title Great Sage Equal to Heaven. After his defeat by the Buddha, he becomes Sanzang's disciple to atone for his sins.

The journey is a series of 81 trials, each involving battles with demons and monsters that often represent human vices. The novel is simultaneously a comic adventure, a spiritual allegory, and a satire of Chinese bureaucracy. Its religious and philosophical themes are woven into puns and wordplay, many lost in translation.
