    Overview

Johnnie Walker is a Scotch whisky brand owned by Diageo and produced in Scotland, with a history that goes back to 1820. That year, a Kilmarnock grocer named John Walker opened a shop and began selling whisky alongside his other goods. His son Alexander and grandson Alexander Walker II turned the family trade into a global business, building the square bottle and slanted label that made the product recognizable on shelves from Glasgow to Guangzhou. The brand stayed tied to Kilmarnock for nearly two centuries, bottling at the Hill Street plant until Diageo closed it in 2012, ending a 190-year run in the town. Today Johnnie Walker is the highest-selling Scotch whisky in the world. Reported annual sales reached 20.3 million cases in 2025, which works out to roughly 182.7 million liters. The range runs from the entry-level Red Label to the premium Blue Label, with Black, Double Black, Green, and Gold in between. It is a blended Scotch, meaning the liquid combines grain and malt whiskies from different distilleries, and that consistency is a big part of why it sells at this scale. Diageo, the British drinks giant formed in 1997 from the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan, owns the brand and controls its global distribution.
