John William Oliver is a British-American comedian, political commentator, and television host best known for his HBO series Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Born in Erdington, Birmingham, he moved to the United States in 2006 and quickly gained recognition as the Senior British Correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a role he held until 2013. His sharp wit and distinctive high-pitched voice have made him a staple of late-night television.

In 2014, Oliver launched his own show which blends satirical comedy with investigative journalism. The program has won numerous awards, including multiple Primetime Emmys and Peabody Awards. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2019 and continues to tackle complex political and social issues with a unique blend of humor and research-driven reporting. [edit]

John William Oliver was born on April 23, 1977, in Erdington, a suburb of Birmingham, England. His father, John Oliver Sr., worked as a chartered accountant, while his mother, Mary, was a teacher. Growing up in a middle-class household, Oliver attended King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys before heading to St Edmund Hall at the University of Oxford to study English Literature.

At Oxford, his comedic talents began to flourish within the university's vibrant student theater scene. He joined the Oxford Revue and performed with the Oxford University Dramatic Society alongside future stars like Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. These early experiences honed the improvisational skills that would define his career. After graduating in 1996, he spent several years performing stand-up comedy across the United Kingdom, including appearances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Before crossing the Atlantic, Oliver co-hosted the radio show Political Animal and later the podcast The Bugle with Andy Zaltzman. The podcast gained a cult following for its irreverent take on current events. In 2006, seeking new opportunities, he relocated to New York City, where he began performing stand-up routines and eventually landed his first major American television role. [edit]

Oliver's breakthrough in the United States came in 2006 when he was hired as the Senior British Correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. During his seven-year tenure, he delivered biting commentary on British politics and culture, earning three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2013, he stepped into the guest host chair for eight weeks while Stewart took a hiatus, receiving widespread praise for his performance.

Beyond his correspondent role, Oliver starred in his own Comedy Central series, John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show, which ran from 2010 to 2013. He also expanded his acting portfolio with recurring roles in sitcoms like Community and voice work in animated films such as The Smurfs, The Smurfs 2, Wonder Park, and the 2019 remake of The Lion King.

The defining moment of his career arrived in 2014 when HBO premiered Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. The show quickly became a cultural phenomenon, winning 32 Primetime Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards. Known for its "deep dives" into complex topics, the program has influenced real-world policy changes, most notably a segment on medical debt that resulted in the cancellation of $15 million in bills for thousands of Americans. As of 2026, Oliver continues to host the show, recently addressing corporate changes at HBO and maintaining his signature style of combining humor with serious investigation. [edit]
