John Hamburg

What Hamburg has instead of trophies is a franchise. The Focker series, launched by a film he co-wrote in 2000, has now run across four decades of his working life and returns in 2026 with Focker-In-Law. Very few screenwriters get to say that about a single property, let alone one they helped invent. Add Zoolander, a film whose quotes outlived its box office, and I Love You, Man, which comedy fans have spent fifteen years defending as an underrated gem, and the case for his influence is made by the work itself. He has also pulled off a specific and difficult trick: getting Rush to appear as themselves in a studio comedy. The band's on-screen cameo is the kind of get that other directors spend careers chasing, and it happened in a movie about a man looking for a best friend.
