John Constantine

John Constantine was born in Liverpool, England, to a working-class family. His early life was marked by tragedy and trauma. As a teenager, he accidentally caused the death of a friend during a botched occult ritual, an event that haunted him for years. Constantine's natural talent for magic emerged early, and he sought out mentors in the dark arts, including the demonologist Papa Midnite. He spent his twenties as a punk rocker and con artist, running scams across Europe while deepening his knowledge of the supernatural. By the time he arrived in the United States, he had built a reputation as a dangerous man to cross, and a useful one to have on your side.

In the Arrowverse, Constantine's backstory includes a failed exorcism that resulted in the death of a young girl named Astra Logue, whose soul was dragged to Hell. This failure became his greatest guilt and a driving force behind his actions.[edit]

He joined the Legends of Tomorrow in season 3, initially as a temporary ally to help defeat the demon Mallus. By season 4, Constantine became a full-time Legend, taking on the role of the team's magical specialist. His arc focused on confronting his past failures, especially Astra's fate, and learning to work with a team rather than alone. In season 5, he finally rescued Astra from Hell, achieving a measure of redemption.
